Red versus Yellow

No new bird pictures to post, so I rerun the pictures of old Black-nape Oriole and Scarlet-rumped Trogon after watching Brazil VS Portugal goalless draw last night.

Probably immature male, the head is more darker than the female, but still not black as an adult male. The wings are not fully develop.

Birding at Bukit Rengit 2nd day Raya Haji

I took the opportunity of Hari Raya Haji holiday for a short 3 hours birding at Bukit Rengit near Lancang.
Got 2 lifers. (no a good pictures, but enough for my record)
After refering to bird book actually I got 3 lifer, with that Cinnamon-rumped Trogon that I thought as a juvenile Diard's

1. Rufous Piculet (Sasia abnormis)

2. Diard's Trogon (Harpactes diardii) - Female - preening

3. Cinnamon-rumped Trogon (Harpactes orrhophaeus) - female

Local name: Kesumba Pelandok

One month with no birding trip, make me itchy to go out. Fasting month over, the end of six days Syawal fasting was celebrated with one hour trip to Bukit Rengit last Sunday with the main objective - TO FIND TROGON

I have been to Rengit before, and seen a female Scarlet-rumped Trogon, with the help of fellow birder. This time I am alone with no other birder or photographer.

I reached the birding site at 7.00am and spotted this red bird 55 minutes later.
Not an easy task to see this motionless bird hiding among the yellow green foliage.

Although this is the same trogon species that I have seen last year, this a male species is new to me. Very happy to met this guy without anyone help.

This un-croped shows the limitation of 400mm, so Minister of Finance, please approve my 600mm f4 IS lens. :)

I'm not to happy with the quality of this images, not sharp enough. What can I do at shutter speed of 1/25 sec in the dark canopy overcast morning. Even flash can't help it.

The male species sport a black head, wheres the female just brown.

This Asian Fairy Bluebird (Irena puella) was my other lifer that day.

ID Correction: Chestnut-rumped Babbler (Stachyris maculata)
I noticed that there was rapid development at Bukit Rengit,
A new bigger bridge is under construction. This wide clearing land is for new building of Malaysian Institute for Biodiversity.
That big yellow sign board shows "Pembangunan Institut Kepelbagaian Biologi (IKB) Lancang, Pahang Darul Makmur". Meaning development for Institute for Biodiversity. 'YYM Builder Sdn Bhd.' was given a contract to complete the RM 25 million phase 1 project .
I hope the development and land clearing does not interfere with animal and nature there.
Red-bearded Bee-eater (Nyctyornis amictus), only gave me a back view..
Spotted this Stripe-throated Bulbul (Pycnonotus finlaysoni) foraging on vines.
and this jumpy Rufescent Prinia (Prinia rufescens) was my last bird, found it at 12.34pm.
Went home at 1.00pm, tired but happy - MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Birding on 'Pahang Hari Hol' at Bukit Rengit

7th May is a public holiday in the State of Pahang here in Malaysia. It is called Hari Hol - day to remember the past Sultan, ruler of the state.
I take the opportunity to indulging in my hobby - birding / bird photography. Bukit Rengit is a well known among birder for its lowland bird species. Situated near Lancang and within the Krau Wildlife Forest Reserve. The Malaysia Institute of Biodiversity located there.

I got five ΔΔΔΔΔ lifers that day.

Δ Lifer No.1 - Wreathed Hornbill (Rhyticeros undulatus)
I almost miss this species if not for the sound of its wings. I heard loud swishing sound and looked up, OMG there a pair of big bird in flight. Just enough time for two quick grab shots.
The lower left is a male with yellow gular pouch, and female (right) sport a bluish gular pouch.

Δ Lifer No. 2 - Black-capped Babbler (Pellorneum capistratum).
I photographed this babbler at the small stream there. This bird was having a bath at this shallow crystal clear water at 10.45am. Sorry for disturbing you! ;)

Δ Lifer No. 3 - Crimson-winged Woodpecker (Picus puniceus).
(my 5th woodpecker so far, out of 18 in Malaysia)
You can't miss this noisy hole digger. This Crismson-winged ID can be confused with Banded Woodpecker if not for the pale grayish-bluish eyering for this crimson species.

Δ Lifer No. 4 - Chestnut-breasted Malkoha (Phaenicophaeus curvirostris) - my 4th malkoha out of 6). Beautiful big bird (size=46cm) with long tail and bare red patch of rough skin around the eye.

Actually this bird was feeding on butterfly larva when I photograph it.
I could not get the full body picture with food in mouth because of thick leaves blocked my view.

Δ Lifer No. 5 - Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus caeruleus)
This bird of prey was not exactly at Bukit Rengit, but at Felda Lakum (Palm oil plantation).
I was on my way back when I noticed this white bird perched motionless at a tall dead tree about 30meter from main road. I stopped my car and slowly assembled my shooting gear, and stat firing in the hot sun (1.14pm). It did not afraid of me and stay there until I said goodbye because my CF card already full .
This species is very common in Palm oil plantation, feeding on rats that eat palm fruits (talk about a food chain here).
